Canon C500 levels scaling

  1. I was on set yesterday with a Canon C500, having some trouble matching looks between Resolve and LiveGrade. Eventually I figured out that this camera uses extended levels (0-255) when shooting C-Log. This applies to both the SDI output and recorded MXF files. So in Resolve, you have to interpret the footage as data levels, and in LiveGrade, set extended in, legal out. This way everything matches. I could not find this documented anywhere, so I'm sharing it here for the benefit of others.
Are there other cameras that output extended levels through SDI? It's the first time I've come across it.

    Marc Wielage likes this.
  2. The Sony F65 used to do this, and I assume still does.

  3. I am currently working on a show with the Sony F55. It also outputs full/extended/data range. Same workflow for me: set LiveGrade to Extended in, Legal out. I only found this out through a colleague. Buried in the F55 manual there is a mention of it. Only on SDI 1 and SDI 2. The other 2 SDI outputs provide user select-able LUTs.
