Just thought I'd mix it up and start a thread about what high end solutions people are using/liking/hating. I'm actually looking at projection options. So I'm wondering what opinions people have. Obviously something dci compliant. Not crazy bright. The NEC NC800C and now NC900C seem to be popular in post houses. The Barco S2K10S seems interesting. Christie Solaria One? Anyone using these? Seems 4K solutions are significantly brighter. Kind of a problem for a grading theater. Would like to hear your thoughts/ experiences.
That Barco looks nice on paper and probably in real life, plus doesn't it have a low wattage bulb setting for smaller screens? Edit: I just looked at the Barco website the DP2k-P and DP4k-P projectors for post which look really really nice for grading. -Rob-
They do. Plus optional lower wattage bulbs. Seem like that can be workable. Though its using a .69" dlp chip... Not sure what drawback is there given everything else.
The DP-2K-P uses the 1.2" DMD and has LUT integration plus states 'Significantly wider gamut than DCI spec" whatever that means....;-) more good? More flexible with profiling stocks, etc.... I don't think there is room on my Amex for that right now though.... Also lamps from 1.2Kw to 4.0kw and they are standard Xenon bulbs. The DP4K-P uses a 1.38" 4K DMD chipset!
What only 134Kg no biggie..... I suppose it costs some measure of it's weight in a precious metal too....
The Christie is even lighter at 56Kg or so... how about the Projection Design FL35? LED illumination 2.5K DLP and 3G SDI in, plus smaller and I assume less cost than a "Real" DCI machine like the others, plus $0 bulb cost for 100K hrs. -Rob-
I think it is just the odd DLP chipset, it is a 1" DMD DC3 as this projector is often used for simulation stuff, it is 2560 x 1600 I think, I am not sure how it res switches a 2K SDI signal.... but it does have a stable light source. I guess trying to use anything other than a real DCI projector for DCI work is a lesson in compromise. -Rob-
Anything other than a dci projector for dci work, isn't dci work, unfortunately. There does seem to be an underserved market in projectors. I think something 2K, ~5,000 lumes, with HD-SDI input, that had color critical performance, would own the market at $25k, probably $40k for 4K.
What do you guys think is the longevity of the DCI spec ? When do you think it will change ? and how will it change ? Like if lasers come out to be really good, will it change, or is it written in stone ? like REC709 ? Any thoughts ?
I think the DCI spec is going to be here for some time, it is flexible and I assume that a laser based projector can be included in the DCI spec if it meets the requirements. I don't really think that there is something so great on the immediate horizon compared with a large size (i.e. 1.5") 3-DMD 4K Xenon projector. I also think 3D is again DOA and while it has a place in theaters it is going to remain a niche and lasers are really only being considered to make 3D brighter otherwise as Juan said there are problems with using them as a lamp as the spectrum is spikey. -Rob-
I think a projector with a single big chip (the 2K 1.2" or 4K 1.38" DMD) with a LED illumination system at the $25K price range, especially if the LED mix could accurately emulate a Xenon bulb (which I think is possible with some of the new LEDs) would make a great Post projector and be low cost to maintain and be very stable over time. -Rob-
Hi Everyone, take a look at the projectiondesign's F82 with DCI filters. I will probably get one. Profiling it gave very good results. Couldn't find any other 3-chip-dlp with dci colors in my price-, noise-, power- and size range.
Took delivery of a Sony VW1000ES yesterday. Installed and fired up today. Impressed. Conformed Alexa quad 4, Red Epic and some 35mm DPX scans in Resolve for DCP out, all very nice. Looking forward to the next three week feature grade.
