We knew back in January that the Mac Pros were on the way out, but still bought an M2 Ultra (192GB) a month later. I'm fine with it, and knew the risks going in. I have too much experience with Apple obsoleting hardware in a short time -- but I'm confident I can get 5 years out of this workstation. macOS has come a long way, and while I still try to stay 6 months behind to avoid running into bugs, what I have is working fine for the narrow range of things I need in my work.
We need two internal SSDs plus a lot more I/O ports than the Mac Studio Ultra could give us. Hubs tend to break down over time and are (to me) a temporary solution. The PCI slots in the Mac Pro still meant something for us in terms of port expandibility and the internal SSDs.
None of our workstations have gone beyond 5-6 years for decades, so we're good with it. Hell, I know people still using Windows 8 on Intel Pentium. So there's a precedent for it. As it was, we got a hefty discount from Apple for a B-stock Mac Pro M2 Ultra (fully loaded), and it was actually cheaper than our 2013 Intel Mac Pro (aka "the Trashcan Mac") or the 2019 Intel Mac Pro, which we got rid of a year ago. As long as we can get serious post work done in the next 5 years, we're confident the Mac Pro will pay for itself.
