ColourSpace ZRO - Low-Cost Manual Calibration Software Thread

ColourSpace ZRO is a low-cost license version of ColourSpace for Manual Display Calibration and Verification.

It's expected to be the leading solution in consumer/professional level free calibration solutions with a modern interface and simple to use as the first choice to the calibration journey.

The typical problem of other free calibration solutions (like HCFR) is that they are not available for up-to-date guides, so while the software is fine, it will complex in operation for the average users with limited experience in calibration.

ColourSpace will always have up-to-date guides, an on-line interactive manual, and videos to explain the features, settings, graphs, and necessary details for new users.

ColourSpaceZRO Features / Capabilities

ColourSpace ZRO is a reduced in functions license level of ColourSpace.

ColourSpaceZRO is useful for manual calibration using any calibration control or regular TV/projector/monitor menus (or Service Menus).

ColourSpaceZRO interface has a configurable interface for the chart size/layout using multiple windows; users can decide to see only the charts they want, without limitations.

ColourSpaceZRO uses Error Tangent lines in CIE charts to see the measured point's distance from the target:

ColourSpaceZRO uses Color-coded CIE measured points for more straightforward to use evaluations.

The Green, Orange, and Red tick boxes will display the dE range only of the selected dE standard:

Green ≤ 1dE / Orange > 1dE ≤ 2.3dE / Red > 2.3dE

New user-defined patch color sequences have been implemented for manual TV CMS adjustments, allowing any patch sequences to be imported for either manual or automated measurements.

But, the most significant new capability of ColourSpace is that it enables future flexibility.

The new code base has been developed to allow unrestricted future development of new calibration tools, graphical layouts, and more.
 
Meter Profiling with WRGB OLEDs

ColourSpace uses a more advanced meter profiling method to fix meter profiling calculation issues introduced with WRGB OLEDs when regular meter profiling is used.

The traditional '4 Colour Matrix Method (FCMM)' meter profiling method is not suitable for non-additive displays.

It's called '4 Colour Volumetric Matching' (FCVM).

That meter profiling method is not available in LightSpace.

LightSpace uses 4 Colour Matrix Method (FCMM).

ColourSpace has available a WRGB OLED meter spectral correction table (X-Rite EDR file) suitable for WRGB OLED panel-based users of i1Display PRO.

X-Rite i1Display PRO SDK has an OLED spectral correction table suitable for Sony Broadcast RGB OLED.

ColourSpace users of i1Display PRO have available spectral correction tables for both RGB and WRGB OLEDs.

The respected HCFR (free open-source) calibration solution uses the regular meter profiling procedure (like LightSpace). However, that meter correction method is not suitable for WRGB OLED meter profiling using a reference spectro.

Colorimeter Recommendation

We recommend that users not purchase Spyder colorimeters due to high unit-per-unit variations, slower meter read, and more inferior low light measurement capability than X-Rite colorimeters.

X-Rite's AIO (All-In-One) Sync Mode for i1Display PRO REV B-02 Colorimeters

X-Rite 1Studio, ColorMunki Display, or i1Display PRO (Firmware A-02) do not support X-Rites' AIO mode, and the Intelligent Integrator function of ColourSpace will not work correctly due to meter firmware limitation.

X-Rite i1Display Studio and ColorMunki Display users can use all other models (BURST / Freq / Period) and enable the Average Low Light function to improve repeatability in low luminance readings.

X-Rite i1Display PRO (OEM / Retail / Retail Plus / Custom Branded OEM) with B-02 Firmware (see your meter sticker) can use the X-Rite's AIO sync mode.

The latest generation of i1Display PRO's (REV B-02) features a new refresh rate detection and synchronization AIO (All in One) measurement mode.

AIO sync mode will improve the measurement stability for certain displays and providing faster reading times. (~50% faster).

ColourSpace Intelligent Integration

Intelligent Integration is not an averaging method.

For example, using Intelligent Integrator with value 2, the i1Display PRO (REV. B-02) will perform a second, third, fourth, etc. reading while increasing integration times up to the maximum integration time of 6 seconds.

The readings will stop as soon as a stable and valid reading is achieved.

When averaging is used for measurement, it will not provide any real improvement in inaccuracy.

Averaging works as a smooth filter with no attempt to get a more accurate measurement.

* IMPORTANT CHANGES ABOUT CUSTOM PATCHSETS / TARGET LUMA *

ColourSpace 1.0.0.1046 release has changed the way the Target Luma is working.

SMTPE Video Legal Levels Signal, in 8-bit values, has 16 as reference black (0%) and 235 as reference white (100% White); when you want to profile/calibrate for video levels, select LEGAL @ ColourSpace patchscale.

When custom patchsets are used, they have to contain 16-235 RGB triplet values.

SMTPE Extended Video Levels Signal, in 8-bit values, has 16 as reference black (0%), 235 as reference white (100% White), and 255 are Super White (109%); when you want to profile/calibrate for extended levels, select EXTENDED @ ColourSpace patchscale.

When users use custom patchsets, they have to contain 16-255 RGB triplet values.

LG OLED users for SDR profiling use EXTENDED patchscale for pre-calibration and profiling.

Sony TV users also use EXTENDED patchsets.

ColourSpace users familiar with LG OLED pre-calibration know that for SDR Reference (Night - 2.4 gamma) profiling, they will pre-calibrate 109% Super White (255.255.255) for 124 nits, to get ~100 nits in post-calibration verification @ 100% Reference White.

The old recommendation was to enter as Target Luma 124 nits and then start with pre-calibration of 255.255.255 (aka 109% Super White) RGB Balance.

ColourSpace 1.0.0.1046 changed the way the Target Luma is working, so the users will have to enter 100 nits to Target Luma, since 100% is the reference white, and then the 255.255.255 RGB triplet will automatically target 123.4 nits @ manual measure window, based to their target gamma setting.

In other words, users will have to enter the 100% value they want as a target when EXTENDED patchscale is selected, and ColourSpace will calculate the target Y for levels above 235.

After that new change, when EXTENDED custom patchlist are used for calibration have to contain White 235.235.235 / Red 235.16.16 / Green 16.235.16 / Blue 16.16.235 for the proper plotting of RGB Separation chart and general calculations.

For different (user custom) patchsets for an EXTENDED range of values, it will require additional 235 patches to make them compatible with ColourSpace 1.0.0.1046.
 
1000 Point volumetric verification run using ColourSpaceZRO

Hey ColourSpace ZRO users,

As you know, ColourSpace ZRO provides the capability to load custom patchsets; however, the maximum number of color patches is 256 per file.

I have recorded a video to show a 'trick' for measuring 1000 color points with ColourSpace ZRO.

The 10-Point Cube (09 April 2021) ZIP will contain three folders with 1000 point patchsets for different patchscale settings:

FULL (0-255)...PC users / Davinci Resolve

LEGAL (16-235)... Consumer TV evaluation (recommended for CalMAN's LG OLED AutoCAL verification)

EXTENDED (16-255)... Consumer TV evaluation (or CalMAN's LG OLED AutoCAL extensive verification)


I used a 10-Point Cube Anisometric sorted patchset (1000 patches) and spitted to 4 smaller patchlist of 250 colors.

We use 1000 point patchlist to evaluate the performance of LG OLED, after an SDR 3D LUT using ColourSpace HTL (or another license level with LUTs generation).

You can see some example of ColourSpace users with 1000 point verification results below:

After an SDR 3D LUT from ~5000 colorpoints following ColourSpace Guides for LG OLED, it will provide a verification of 1000p with all green or max 5-6 points above 1dE2000, usually around 1.1 - 1.2 dE max, no error above 1.5dE.

You can use these results as a 'reference' and see how a LUT for LG generated from CalMAN performs.

Regular verification runs available to other calibration software are very limited to the range of measured colors.

When you have a small patchlist, like ColorChecker Classic / SG, it's not possible to identify LUT generation problems, like 'SharkFins' from CalMAN, for example.

That specific 1000 color patchset can measure such problems since it will measure a lot of edge colors and many different levels of hue/saturation/luminance range for a volumetric verification.

You can find some references of the SharkFin problems a lot of CalMAN users have posted below:

'SharkFin' issue of CalMAN is a problem introduced to the full saturated primaries/secondaries; these colors are not measured during the very limited verification patchlist of ColorChecker SG or Classic because they are not including any full saturated color patch.

I have recorded a video to see how to perform that verification run or 1000 points.

Users of different TV/projector units can use that 1000 color (10-Point Cube) verification patchsets also, but be sure that your TV/Projector is not clipping WTW. (above 100%, to allow headroom and see flashing bars in Contrast/Color Clipping patterns above 235)

You can view the video with 0.5x speed or use 'pause' to read the text info if required. (or translation of the subtitles)

The video is useful even for users without plans to run large verification run because it will explain many different plotting options.

The measurement speed is fast because I used a virtual meter with 0 sec of extra delay.

While taking real measurements, you can navigate the software and change plotting options since ColourSpace provides that capability.

That 1000 color patch verification run can be used by any Monitor/TV/Projector user to perform a very deep analysis of the post-calibration performance after a good manual calibration.

Evaluation of the performance of a display

I see many times that people use only ColorChecker Classic to evaluate the display's performance after a 3D LUT generation.

ColorChecker Classic is the default measurement method to measure the performance of a display to some calibration software.

ColorChecker Classic is enough to evaluate a performance of a display since it will not measure any edge color; it's just a quick and very limited patchset for a quick evaluation.

ColorChecker SG contains more colors but still is not covering a lot of areas of the gamut.

When users want to evaluate the difference between different patchsets or cube sizes; profiling from 100 measured colors or from 729 (9-Point Cube), or larger cube size (1000/3000/5000/10000 colors), it's recommended to measure with 10-Point Cube patchset (1000 patches) to evaluate for differences in performance.

10-Point Cube patchset can be used also to evaluate with a lot more detail the results of a manual calibration using regular calibration controls (10/20-Point Grayscale and 6 Color CMS).

As we know, internal TV CMS controls are limited to 6 adjustable control points (primary+secondary colors) to modern TVs / projectors.

These six control points will try to reduce the errors for the whole color gamut.

Usually, the default patchlists to perform CMS calibration based on RGB-CMY colors with:

100% Saturation with 100% Luminance
100% Saturation with 75% Luminance
75% Saturation with 100% Luminance
75% Saturation with 75% Luminance

Some displays can be calibrated better with a specific selection of Saturation and Luminance level.

When you are using 75% Saturation patterns, it may reduce the color errors in ColorChecker (since ColorChecker measures colors away from the edge of the gamut) while it will increase the errors to borders of the gamut.

The ideal method to evaluate for all these is to perform a calibration using a specific CMS saturation/luminance level and then verify the performance with 1000 patches.

If time is available, perform a new calibration using a different saturation/luminance level and verify with 1000 patches also.

Ideally, it will require performing 4 CMS calibrations and always verify with 1000 patches.

After comparing the CIE chart of ColorSpace ZRO with 1000 points, the user will know which CMS patterns provide better performance with lower dE, so the user will know which particular patterns to use in future calibrations of that specific display/projector.

This method is a good practice for users to understand better the capabilities of the display.

1000 Point volumetric verification run using ColourSpaceZRO

About the 10-Point Volumetric Verification patchset, you can download the patchsets from here.

Edge Color Test (255 patches) Measurement Run

It's available for download the Edge Color Test sequence for ColourSpace ZRO users. Download Link

Edge Color Test will measure the border of the gamut (255 color patches) with about 20-Points that connect each primary/secondary color.

Additionally, it will measure 21-Point Grayscale, ~20-Point of Saturation of Secondary colors (CMY), and ~20-Point of Luminance of Primary Colors (RGB).

That measurement run can reveal issues to the edge of the gamut since some color engines tend to expand saturation to these levels, like a 'Shark Fin' effect.

Some other displays/projectors expand or compress the edge colors; you can also see if some enabled processing introduces any issues.

The Edge Color Test (26 May 2021) ZIP will contain three patchlist with different patchscale settings:

The RGB Bars widget will get a 10x zoom for the users to increase the sensitivity of the bars when needed, beneficial when the user wants to reduce as tiny errors as much as possible.

The current ColourSpace RGB Bars look like this:

RGB Widget has an overlay; when the user will move the mouse cursor to the chart, it will appear an overlay with radion buttons.
